Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach
The Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach, also known as the South Beach Boardwalk, is a popular destination for residents and visitors of Staten Island. Stretching for 2.5 miles along the south shore of the island, the boardwalk offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
The boardwalk and beach are named after President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was a frequent visitor to the area during his presidency. The boardwalk was built in the 1930s as part of the New Deal, and has since become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike.
The boardwalk offers a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors. There are several playgrounds, picnic areas, and sports fields along the boardwalk, as well as a fishing pier and a skate park. The beach itself is a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing.
One of the highlights of the boardwalk is the South Beach Sea Wall, a stunning 1.7-mile long mural that showcases the history and culture of Staten Island. The mural was created by local artists and tells the story of the island’s maritime history, natural beauty, and diverse communities.
The boardwalk is also home to a variety of food stands and restaurants, offering everything from classic boardwalk fare like hot dogs and ice cream to more upscale dining options.
The Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of Staten Island. With its stunning views, diverse activities, and lively atmosphere, it’s a perfect place to spend a day out with family and friends.
